Where Plumbing Marketing Leaks

Your Phone Rings for Clogs. Your Margin Lives in Repipes and Sewer Lines.

Most plumbing shops get found for whatever Google decides they do. The ones that grow choose the jobs they want, then build a page, a listing and a campaign for each of them.

One “Services” page lists fourteen things.

Drain cleaning, water heater repair, sewer replacement and gas line work squeezed into one bulleted list gives Google no reason to rank you for any of them. Each job a homeowner searches deserves its own page that names the problem, the fix and your service area.

Your map listing shows the owner’s home address.

Google’s own help pages use a plumber working from home as the example of a business that should hide its street address and list a service area instead. Getting that wrong puts the listing outside Google’s guidelines.

The lead aggregators get the call before you do.

Home service marketplaces and directories rank for the same searches, then sell the request to several plumbers at once. Every job that comes through them is a job you competed for after paying to see it.

After hours calls go to voicemail.

Emergency searches are a large share of plumbing demand, and the homeowner with water on the floor calls the next number in the map pack. Ads that run at 11 PM without someone answering spend money on a competitor’s booking.

Nobody knows which campaign booked the water heater.

A drain call and a full repipe can be worth very different amounts. If calls are not tracked by source and matched to tickets in your field software, budget gets set by gut feel.

Reviews mention “great guy” but never the job.

Reviews that name the work, such as a sewer camera inspection or a tankless install, tell Google and AI tools what you are good at. Asking for reviews the right way is part of the marketing, not an afterthought.

What We Do

Plumbing Marketing Built Around the Jobs You Want

Six disciplines, each pointed at the calls your techs can run profitably in the zip codes you serve.

SEO

Map Pack and Service Pages by Job Type

A properly set up service-area profile, plus one page for each job and each town you cover, with pricing context, timing and how fast a truck can get there.

  • Drain, sewer and hydro jetting pages
  • Water heater repair, replacement and tankless pages
  • Leak detection, slab leak and repipe pages
  • Service-area pages for each city you dispatch to

AI Search

The Plumber AI Recommends for the Job

Homeowners ask ChatGPT who fixes slab leaks nearby or which plumber does tankless installs. We give those tools consistent, specific facts about your shop to repeat.

  • Service-specific company and tech bios
  • Consistent listings across Google, Apple, Bing, Yelp and Nextdoor
  • Review requests that name the job performed
  • Tracking of AI referrals and mentions

Paid Search

Local Services Ads and Search Ads That Book Jobs

Pay per lead Local Services Ads for the top of the page, search campaigns split by emergency and planned work, and schedules matched to when someone can pick up the phone.

  • Local Services Ads setup, verification and lead disputes
  • Separate emergency and replacement campaigns
  • Zip code targeting around your dispatch radius
  • Call tracking tied to booked tickets

Content

Answers Homeowners Look Up Before They Call

Practical articles on warning signs, repair or replace decisions and what a job usually involves, written with your lead tech so the details are right.

  • Repair versus replace guides for water heaters and sewer lines
  • Seasonal content for freezes, storms and holidays
  • Job write-ups with photos from your own crews
  • Cost explainers that set expectations before the visit

Web Design

A Site That Gets a Truck Booked From a Phone

Click to call at the top of every page, service area and hours stated plainly, license and insurance visible, and pages that load fast on a cell signal in a flooded basement.

  • Job type and service-area architecture
  • License, insurance and guarantee details up front
  • Online booking connected to your field software
  • Fast, lightweight pages

CRO

More Booked Jobs From the Same Calls

Forms and call flows that capture the problem, the address and the urgency, so dispatch can price and schedule the job on the first contact.

  • Emergency versus scheduled intake paths
  • Text and chat options for younger homeowners
  • Financing prompts on replacement pages
  • Lead reporting by job type and source

How Plumbing Search Works

What Makes Plumbing Marketing Different

Home services share a playbook, but plumbing has its own pressure points. These are the plumbing details we plan every campaign around.

Local Services

Pay Per Lead Ads Sit Above Everything Else

Google’s Local Services Ads charge per lead rather than per click and vet the business, its licenses, its insurance and the techs who go into homes. Leads judged invalid can be disputed for credit, which only pays off if someone on your team actually files the disputes. Coverage reported in October 2025 says Google folded its Guaranteed, Screened and License Verified badges into one Google Verified badge.

Ad Policy

Plumbers Are Not on Google’s Restricted List

Google’s local services ad policy currently restricts locksmith and garage door ads in the US and requires advanced verification for them. Plumbing is not on that list, so a standard Google Ads account can run plumbing search ads today. Local Services Ads have their own separate verification.

Service Area

Most Plumbing Listings Should Not Show an Address

Google tells businesses that travel to customers to hide their street address and set a service area, and it uses a plumber working from home as the example. Google also suggests keeping the service area within about two hours of driving from your base. Ranking still depends heavily on where the searcher is, so location pages and reviews carry the reach beyond your shop.

Emergency

Emergency Searches Are Less Contested Than You Think

Semrush puts “emergency plumber near me” at 135,000 monthly searches with a keyword difficulty of 34, and “24 hour plumber near me” at 22,200 with a difficulty of 21, well below the 52 for “plumber near me.” A shop that truly answers after hours can build pages and ad schedules around that window.

Licensing

Licenses Are Issued by States and Cities

Plumbing licenses come from state boards in some places and city or county offices in others, and homeowners do check. Showing the license number, the issuing authority and proof of insurance on the site answers that question before it slows down the call.

AI Search

AI Assistants Pick From What Listings Say

ChatGPT began showing maps for local businesses in December 2024, and AI answers about who to call draw on listings, reviews and directory profiles. In our AI visibility audits for medical practices, mismatched name, address and phone details are the most common problem, and shops that have moved, rebranded or added a second location pick up the same mismatches.

National monthly searches and keyword difficulty for the jobs a plumbing company can build pages around. Lower difficulty means a local shop can realistically reach page one.

How We Work

How a Plumbing Engagement Runs

  1. 01

    Rank the jobs by value

We sit down with your ticket data to see which job types, neighborhoods and seasons make money, then check who holds the map pack and page one for each of them. That list sets the order of everything that follows.

  2. 02

Fix the profile and the phones

Service-area settings, categories, hours and photos on your Business Profile, matching listings across the major directories, and call tracking that ties every ring to a source. This is the quickest work to move.

  3. 03

Launch ads while the pages get built

Local Services Ads and search campaigns cover the high-value jobs right away. Meanwhile we publish a page for each job type and service town, with your own crew photos and the details only a working plumber would know.

  4. 04

Report on booked jobs, not clicks

Calls, forms and Local Services leads are matched to booked tickets in your field software, so you see cost per job by service and source and can move budget toward what pays.

Common Questions

Plumbers, Answered

A plumbing marketing agency gets a plumbing company found by homeowners who need a plumber, and turns those searches into booked jobs. At Brown Bear that means setting up and growing your Google Business Profile, building a page for each job type and service town, running Local Services and search ads, and making sure AI assistants describe your shop accurately.

For most residential shops they are worth testing, because they sit at the top of the page and you pay per lead instead of per click. The catch is lead quality. Wrong numbers, spam and out-of-area requests happen, and Google credits invalid leads only when you dispute them. We review leads weekly and file disputes so you are not paying for calls that were never jobs.

Profile and listing fixes can move map visibility within weeks. Service pages for competitive jobs in a busy metro usually take several months to rank, depending on what competitors have built. That is why we run paid search on the most valuable jobs from the start and pull back as organic positions come in.

Ranges and examples help, exact prices usually do not. Homeowners want to know whether a water heater replacement is a few hundred dollars or a few thousand before they book. A page that explains what drives the cost, gives a typical range in your market and offers an in-home estimate earns more calls than one that hides the subject.

We offer HVAC marketing too, covered on its own page, and many shops run both trades under one roof. When a company does plumbing and HVAC, we plan the two together so the pages, listings and ad budgets support each other instead of competing.

Not as clients. Our client work has centered on medical practices, mostly plastic surgery, where we run local SEO, AI search and paid search for businesses that live or die by the map pack. The mechanics carry over to plumbing directly. Before you sign, we will show you exactly who ranks in your service area and what we would do about it.
